Sasha Harrington

My name is Sasha Harrington I am an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander woman.

My family lines are from Saibai Island in the Torres Straits and Bundjalung Counrty on the NSW/QLD border. Born and raised on Bundjalung Country, I am a young woman who is passionate about empowering our young people to achieve.

I have been working with the Solid Mob for the last 4 years, coach local young girls rugby teams and am an active community member. I have a Diploma in Aboriginal Studies from Tranby Aboriginal College and am look forward to teaching our next generations in the near future.

Josh Apanui is from Tweed Heads and is proud Bundjalung, South Sea Islander and Maori descendant.

Josh is one of six children to Virginia Apanui (nee Bellear) and Tui Apanui. Growing up, Josh has experienced love, joy and happiness, however, he has also faced life’s challenges as a young man, and has learnt about choices and consequences.

At the age of 34 years, Josh has travelled and worked a lot, and hopes to share some stories with youth and community in support of understanding the principles of leadership, responsibility and identity.

Josh is now enrolled at Griffith University studying Bachelor of Arts.

A workshop designed to encourage greater community awareness of Australian South Sea Islander history and ignite inspiration and connection in local youth is coming to Mount Druitt Hub this month.

BLACK (Bold Leadership Awareness Cultural Knowledge) is aimed at 17-30 year olds from all walks of life and cultural backgrounds, and features rap, influential speakers and engaging workshops.

Attendees will experience the energy and talent of recent Aria-award nominee L-Fresh The Lion, who will also lend a voice to a live panel discussion over the weekend.

L-FRESH The LION is renowned for his powerful presence, inspiring live shows and thought-provoking lyricism. In a short space of time, the Western Sydney artist has gone from underground community events and ciphers to national tours and major festivals. It speaks of an MC with a sense of purpose and self-belief.

Inspired by the soulful movement in US hip hop of the late 1990s/early 2000s, and the love and respect for his own cultural and ancestral roots of the Sikhs from Punjab, India, L-FRESH is an artist like no other.

Mleeka Jali Hart is a local community-orientated woman, of proud South Sea Islander and Aboriginal heritage. She has a Bachelor of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Knowledge systems, an advanced Diploma Social Science – Human Rights Diplomacy and Advocacy.

Mleeka has overcome many struggles in life to be where she is today. She admits, at times the journey hasn’t been an easy path – more like a roller coaster – but maintains she has worked hard and is thankful for the people who believed in her, even when she did not.

Her motivation to succeed comes from her people, her community, and the future.

We welcome Mleeka who is speaking at BLACK Tweed Heads October 29th and 30th 2016, at the South Tweed Community Centre.

Uncle Greg Simms will be honouring the BLACK forum Mount Druitt

Uncle Greg Simms is an activist for reconciliation, a traditional woodcarver, a storyteller and an Aboriginal cultural educator.

Uncle Greg Simms is an activist for reconciliation, a traditional woodcarver, a storyteller and an Aboriginal cultural educator.

His ties to the Aboriginal community of Greater Western Sydney are through his ancestral links to the Gundungurra (Water dragon Lizard people) of the Blue Mountains and the Gadigal (whale people) of the Darug nation.

He grew up in La Perouse and now lives in Greater Western Sydney, and is a Community Liaison Officer with Ability Options providing employment services specifically to Aboriginal people with a disability or health condition.

Uncle Greg will be honouring the BLACK forum in Mount Druitt this weekend with Welcome to Country.

We are incredibly privileged to welcome Deng as he speaks live at the BLACK forum, at Mount Druitt Hub this weekend, October 22nd & 23rd 2016.

BLACK (Bold Leadership Awareness Culture Knowledge) is all about raising awareness of Australia’s rich South Sea Islander culture and history, and is open to all community members aged 17-30.

BLACK will feature talks, rap, performances and connection time.

Dr Omid Tofighian appearing at BLACK Mt Druitt October 22nd and 23rd 2016

We are privileged to introduce lecturer, researcher and community advocate, Dr Omid Tofighian to the speaker lineup at BLACK Mount Druitt.

Dr Tofighian combines philosophy with interests in rhetoric, religion, popular culture, transnationalism, displacement and discrimination.

He completed his PhD in Philosophy at Leiden University, the Netherlands, and graduated with a combined honours degree in Philosophy and Studies in Religion at the University of Sydney.

Omid has lived variously in the UAE where he taught at Abu Dhabi University; Belgium where he was a visiting scholar at K.U. Leuven; the Netherlands for his PhD; and intermittent periods in Iran for research. His current roles include Lecturer in Rhetoric and Composition for the Writing Hub and Honorary Research Associate for the Department of Philosophy at the University of Sydney; faculty at Iran Academia; board member for Powerhouse Youth Theatre; campaign manager for Why Is My Curriculum White? – Australasia; and Project Executive for the Religion, State and Society Research Network.

He contributes to community arts and cultural projects and works with asylum seekers, refugees and young people from Western Sydney. He has published numerous book chapters, journal articles and has authored a book.
